Cincinnati Fire Department Equipment Demonstration:
To improve efforts of technical rescue teams to help save lives in disaster situations
Cincinnati, OH – Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) has been selected as a recipient of prototype rescue equipment from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate. CFD received two Controlled Impact Rescue Tools (CIRT) developed as part of the DHS Regional Technology Integration Initiative (RTII) program. CFD has partnered in this DHS program highlighted in 2004 by Senator George Voinovich during a visit to the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Regional Operations Center .
This rescue equipment prototype concept sprang from the rubble of the World Trade Centers, 9/11 attacks, and the concept has become reality in the form of CIRT. The CIRT equipment is available for use regionally at incidents requiring the efficient/rapid breach of concrete structures or collapsed buildings where firefighters, victims, or other rescue personnel may have become trapped. This type of task is especially challenging when such scenarios degrade to urgent life/death situations.
CIRT Technology offers advantages over current breaching methods and is fast/portable requiring no hoses, electric cords, or other types of cumbersome support equipment. The equipment is valued at $32,000 and will benefit the entire Greater Cincinnati Urban Area.
Note: The Cincinnati Fire Department is one of only six technical rescue teams to receive this prototype equipment from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The media is welcome to attend a demonstration of this new regional asset
