RE: Question From The Peanut Gallery In the middle 1980's, there was a MAJOR pipeline explosion in the Queensgate area in the Mill Creek Bottoms around Gest and Linn Streets caused by the derailment of a CSX train and an improperly installed CG&E (now Cinergy) gas transmission pipeline. The resulting explosion and fire desroyed a bridge above the railroad that serviced Cincinnati Union Terminal. Can anyone on this forum provide a date or any other useful data to help understand what happened and the outcome. Oddly, PUCO cannot find the incident report in its files in Columbus. I remember this to be front page news in the two local papers, but need to zero-in on the date to find stories. Random searches so far have turned up nothing. Railroad design engineers (American Railway Engineering & Maintenance of Way Association/ AREMA Committee 1......http://www.Arema.org) that write the suggested standards for pipeline crossings under railroad tracks are reviewing past failures to see if the pipeline casing issue needs to be revised. The Pipeline Industry wishes to do away with safety casings and the Railway Engineers are not sure they quite agree. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx, Charlie Tucker, PLS - Denver

It was a Saturday morning, maybe 9am? I remember it was in the summer months. Warm weather. Engine 3 made the run on the 2nd alarm. Engine 17, Truck 6 & D-2 were originally dispatched to a "report of fumes" outdoors. While they were on the scene investigating, the explosion occured. It knocked the D-2 Marshal down, breaking his nose. If you check Engine 17's old diary pages, circa 1986, '87 or '88, you might be able to pinpoint the exact date.
There is a Lieutenant who is currently assigned to Internal Affairs, who was in charge of E-17 that day. He may be able to shed further light on the incident.
