Engine 16's house at 776 E. McMillan Street was heavilly damaged by a fire on the afternoon of May 22, 1978. (Box 2257: code 3 + 1 extra truck and 1 extra engine) Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the 1870 firehouse. Engine 16 was relocated to E32's quarters (650 Forrest) untill disbanded on July 9, 1978.
I believe that around this time the city was thinking about moving Engine 16 to a new firehouse at Madison and Moorman with or without Engine 23, and obviously it was decided that E16 was no longer needed.
See also "Engine 16's Quarters" on page 2 of this general board for more information.

In addition, in the "Firehouse Relocation Study" published by the city in 1975, the recomondation had been made for the combining of E-16 and E-23 at the present location of E-23. I guess fate made it happen differently....along with the dwindling city funds.

I just talked to the Walnut Hills liaison for the city and he stated that the Walnut Hill Redevelopment Foundation is in the process of finding a developer to rehab the building. He also stated that city funds may be available to help ofset the cost of rehab. Anyone interested in rehabing the building should contact the foundation. Lets hope that something is done soon or we may lose a piece of Cincinnati firefighting history forever.
