Time: 04:14 p.m.
Good evening,
This is District Two Fire Chief Gary Scott reporting on a two-alarm fire, which occurred at 864 West Mehring Way on December 20, 2005. At 4:14 p.m. fire companies were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a large
warehouse structure. While in route, fire units reported
"smoke-in-the-area".
Upon arriving fire personnel confirmed heavy smoke coming from a large one-story metal warehouse structure; the smoke was emitting from all sides of the structure. A two-alarm response was transmitted due to the size
of the building.
At the time of the fire the business was closed and secured requiring firefighters to cut through the large overhead doors, utilizing chain saws to gain access. The roof area was also ventilated and all access points to
the building were forced open to assist with ventilation.
The fire was located in a large commercial dumpster located inside the building; it was extinguished by flooding the dumpster with copious amounts of water. Several fans were put into operation in order to mechanically assist in ventilating the entire structure.
A Fire Investigator was called to the scene to assist in determining fire cause. At this time, preliminary reports point to the cause as accidental, pending further investigation. The fire loss was set at $50,000. There
were 52 fire personnel utilized at this incident. Firefighters were on the fire scene for approximately 2 hours.
