Can anyone explain how the companies assigned on a multiple alarm fire are determined?
At the 3 alarm on E. University yesterday morning the 3rd alarm assignment was En. 20-31 & Tr 21. These were change companies that were en route to other houses that were picked up for the 3rd.

A lot of times move up companies will be dispatched instead of the next companies on the box, they will be closer. For example, let's say there is a 1-alarm in Oakley and the 31's and 46's are on the first. The second alarm assignment may read Engines 49 and 23. However, if the tower moves the 19's to the 31's, the actual dispatch will be Engines 19 and 49. Hope that clears things up for you!

Hi Feemster,
Thank you for the reply. I thought that was what was being done, but I wasn't certain so I thought I would ask.
The assignment just sounded a little odd when dispatched since I figured Engine 5 was probably closer to the fire than the 31's.
Anyway, thanks again and welcome to the board.
Steve
