Fire engine rushing to blaze crashes into pickup truck
Post staff report
A Cincinnati fire engine rushing to a blaze Friday morning crashed head-on into a pickup that crossed the center line on the lower deck of the Western Hills viaduct, police said.
The driver of the pickup, Shawn Inabnitt, 34, of Winton Place, failed to control his vehicle before it struck the truck, said the Cincinnati police Traffic Unit, which investigated.
Inabnitt was critically injured in the crash, said police. He was taken to University Hospital.
The driver of the fire truck, Brandon Freeman, 37, was also transported to University, where he was treated and released.
Four other firefighters on the truck were not injured, but they were checked out at University Hospital as a precaution, the fire department said.
Police said all of the firefighters were strapped into their vehicle.
Inabnitt, however, was not wearing a seat belt.
The fire engine, its emergency lights and siren activated, was heading west on the viaduct about 7:06 a.m. to respond to a one-alarm fire when it collided with Inabnitt's truck near the intersection of Spring Grove Avenue, police said. The impact of the collision sent the pickup into a car traveling behind the fire engine.
Information about the driver of that vehicle, Nicklas Delaney, 23, of Bridgetown, was not available Friday evening.
