As I understand it, engines from the 1930s and earlier (and maybe the 1940s) were equipped with booster reels. But engines from the late 40s and early to mid 50s were ordered without booster reels. I remember that sometime in the late 50's or early 60s booster reels were installed on EXISTING engines that did not have them(example: Seagraves built in 1951, 53, 55). Why was there a period (roughly 1949-1960?) where booster reels were not standard original equipment?
