WHAT MAKES A GOOD OFFICER?
The ability to solve problems, the following steps may help you in solving yours.
1. IDENTIFY the ROOT problem.
Example : An employee may have a change in behavior such as coming into work late, calling off sick or show signs of depression. The problem may appear to be a loss of interest. The ROOT problem may be divorce or death of a loved one. A good Officer will take the time to get to the bottom of the issue.

A Good Officer stays up on the latest technology. The things that will make the job as well as the firefighters more safe. This is cutting edge, ground breaking research, that can only lead to a better fire service.
It has been suggested across the Country that fire departments create, an Officers development curriculum. What classes do you think should be required, prior to promotion. I think the first three classes in any career firefighters certification file should be.
1. Building Construction : You need to know what your crawling into, venting or taking apart.
2. Fire Instructor : You need to be able to explain what it is we do to firefighters as well as the public.
3. Company Officer 3rd Edition : The basis of what a Company Officer does. The when, where and how. This is also a great point of reference for the new Officer.
There are some good tips on this video about Dry wall breaching and pulling. It has been brought to my attention via e-mail. I meant no disrespect. This video even hits on some EMS. Total run time is about 30 minutes. Sit back, relax and watch the whole thing. There is something for everyone to learn or brush up on. The video will run into the next topic by itself.
