This is District Chief Fredrick Prather reporting on the Hazardous Materials Incident that occurred in the CSX rail yard on Wednesday, 7/18/07. The incident involved a tanker that has the carrying capacity of 192,000 gallons; in it was an undetermined amount of Hydrochloric Acid at 36% concentration.
At 6:12 AM, CSX employees called 911 because of a plume that emitted from the tanker during rail yard operations, resulting in a hazardous materials response.
Upon arriving, fire department personnel made an assessment of the situation and worked with the Cincinnati Police Department to establish an evacuation zone of 1/10 mile in all directions from the tanker, located in-between the Western Hills and Hopple Street Viaducts. In addition, as a precaution, the Hopple Street Viaduct was closed.
There were no residential properties in the evacuation zone and all railroad personnel evacuated the area prior to the fire department’s arrival.
After Fire and CSX Hazardous Material Teams gained access to the tanker, it was determined that the rupture disc on the tank became defective. CSX made the appropriate repair to the disc, resolving the incident. Also appropriate monitoring took place and no significant readings were found.
No injuries occurred during the incident, which has an incident address of 3601 Geringer Street.
