One-alarm fire - Givaudan Flavoring Company 110 East 70th Street (Carthage)
Date: 01/05/06 Time: 10:30 p.m.
This is District Four Fire Chief Jay Boeing reporting Cincinnati Firefighters responded to a one-alarm fire at the Givaudan Flavoring Company, which is located at 110 East 70th Street in Carthage. The fire happened on Thursday 1/5/6 at 10:30 PM. First responding fire units were meet by plant officials who stated they had a fire in a spray dryer unit, which was making tropical flavoring concentrate. The fire was confined to the spray unit and it did not appear that there was any chemical release into the atmosphere. It took 35 firefighters approximately one hour to bring this situation under control. Cincinnati Environmental Crimes Unit Fire Lieutenant Richard Jones is investigating the cause of the fire. A preliminary fire loss has not been determined.

Good afternoon,
This is District One Fire Chief Howard Reed reporting on a one-alarm fire that occurred at 124 Malvern Place in the Mount Auburn. The fire happened at 10:21 A.M. on January 26, 2006.
Fire companies were dispatched to a report of a building fire; upon their arrival they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor northeast corner of a two-story single-family dwelling. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack on the fire, which originated in a first floor bedroom. The fire also extended into the kitchen and living room areas of the structure.
The incident was brought under control in less then 20 minutes and caused approximately $50.000 damage to the structure and its contents.
One firefighter injured his left shoulder while attempting to gain entry into the structure; he was transport to University Hospital for medical care. The American Red Cross was also contacted; they were called to assist the family that was displaced from their home because of the fire.

1 ALARM: 3409 Muddy Creek Rd.
Date: 1/26/06 Time: 03:07 p.m. Good Evening,
This is District Two Chief John Zompero of the Cincinnati Fire Department reporting on a structure fire that occurred Thursday afternoon, January 26, in the Western Hills area.
Fire companies were dispatched at 3:07 pm to 3409 Muddy Creek Road for a report of a bedroom on fire. While enroute, several other calls were received by dispatch confirming a dwelling fire. Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke conditions coming from a one-story dwelling that appeared to be occupied. While the fire was being brought under control it was quickly ascertained that the occupants of the home were out and safe. The fire was extinguished before it was able to extend beyond the room of origin.
After talking to one of the structure's occupants, it was determined that the fire was the result of a young child playing with a cigarette lighter in the bedroom and igniting a mattress.
The fire did an estimated $25,000 in damage and there were no reported injuries. Two adults and three children were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by American Red Cross.

1 ALARM: 947 McPherson Avenue

Good afternoon,
This is Acting District Two Chief Paul Garbon of the Cincinnati Fire Department reporting on a late morning fire that occurred today in Price Hill at 11:22 AM.
Firefighters from both of the Price Hill fire stations responded to a report of smoke coming from a building located at 947 McPherson Avenue.
Upon arriving they found a vacant boarded up three-story brick dwelling with fire on its second and third floors; the fire was quickly extinguished and was confined to those floors. Fire crews discovered signs of vagrancy, but no occupants were found during the search of the premise.
The Cincinnati Fire Investigation Unit also responded to the scene to determine the cause of the fire; the fire damage estimate is $8000. In addition the Cincinnati Building Department was notified to investigate the structural stability of the building and to secure the property so that individuals will not have easy access into it.
Fire companies were on the scene for approximately one and a half hours.

2 ALARM FIRE: 609 Maple Avenue Date: 1/29/06 Time: 22:56
This is District Three-Fire Chief Glenn Coleman reporting on a two-alarm fire that happened in Avondale.
Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at Maple and Reading Road on Sunday 1/29/05 at 10:56 pm. They found heavy smoke and fire coming from the basement area of a large two-story brick group home, located at 609 Maple Avenue. The group home housed seven males between the ages of 13 to 16.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack on the fire, attempting to bring it under control. But the fire extended up the structure's walls and into its first floor, and a second alarm fire response was requested for more manpower.
The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes. Heavy fire damage occurred to the structure's basement and first floor. The group home's director is moving all displaced occupants to another group home.
Fire investigators are still on the scene to determine fire cause; the preliminary fire loss estimate is $75,000.

1 Alarm: 2567 Trevor Pl. Date: 02/06/06 Time: 11:08 a.m.
This is District Two Fire Chief Gary Scott reporting on a one-alarm fire, which occurred at 2567 Trevor Place on February 6, 2006.
At 11:08 am fire companies were dispatched to a report of an electrical outlet on fire. Upon arrival, fire personnel confirmed light smoke coming from the rear of a two-story residential structure. An interior attack on the first floor fire was initiated along with a primary search of the entire structure. The fire was located within an interior wall and advancing up to the second floor; the wall was opened to reveal the fire. The house electric was turned off and the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire damage was contained within the rear wall. All occupants exited the building safety. The cause of the fire was due to a faulty electrical connection in the wall outlet. The fire loss was set at $2,000.
There was a smoke detector present and sounding. The American Red Cross was called to assist with the displacement of one adult and four children as a result of this incident. There were no injuries to civilians or fire fighters. Fire personnel were on the fire scene for approximately one hour.

1 Alarm Fire: Taft High School 420 Ezzard Charles Drive (West End) Date: 02/15/06 Time: 11:51 a.m.
This is District Two Fire Chief Gary Scott reporting on a one-alarm fire, which occurred at 420 Ezzard Charles Dr. (Taft High School) on February 15, 2006. At 11:51 a.m. a full one-alarm compliment was dispatched to Taft High School.
Originally, a single engine company and ladder company was dispatched to investigate a single alarm-drop. Once on the scene, they discovered smoke present in the building and requesting a full one-alarm fire compliment.
The school was evacuated and a small fire was located in a women's restroom located on the structure's first floor. The small fire was quickly extinguished, and all occupants had exited the building safety. Fire and smoke damage was contained to the women's restroom. A fire investigator was called to the scene to assist in the fire investigation of the fire.
Currently, the fire cause is undetermined. Fire personnel were on the fire scene for approximately one hour. There were no injuries to civilians or fire fighters at this incident.

1 Alarm Fire: 1930 Fricke Road (Millvale School)
Date: 3/2/06 Time: 11:48 a.m.
This is District Two Fire Chief Gary Scott reporting on a one-alarm fire, which occurred at 1930 Fricke Road on March 2, 2006.
At 11:48 am fire companies were dispatched to a report of a building on fire. Upon arriving, fire personnel confirmed heavy smoke coming from the second floor rear, of a large three-story building under construction; the future location of Millvale School.
A fire-line was advanced up an aerial ladder to the location of the fire. The fire was quickly extinguished. Fire damage was confined to a pile of trash and a nail-gun tool; the fire did not extent into the structure. The cause of the fire was hot debris dropping down onto a pile of trash, which was below a welding operation. The fire loss is set at $500.00. There was one employee of the construction company that was treated and transported for smoke inhalation. There were 28 fire personnel utilized at this incident; they were on the scene for approximately one hour.

2 ALARM FIRE: 4525-27 Whetsel Avenue (Madisonville) Date: 03/07/06 Time: 5:30 a.m.
This is District One Fire Chief Howard Reed reporting on a two-alarm fire that happened at 4525-27 Whetsel Avenue on 3/7/06 at 05:30 A.M. The fire occurred in a two-story frame multi-dwelling located in Madisonville.
Upon our arrival, we found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the structure; initially firefighters attempted an interior attack on the main body of fire. After about 20 minutes of interior firefighting, fire crews were order out of the structure and a defensive attack on the fire was ordered. The fire had spread to the structure's second floor, attic and a Sports Utility Vehicle parked near the building's rear porch; after the fire advanced into the attic it caused the building's roof to collapse.
Fire companies continued their defensive operation bringing the fire under control. Fire Crews are still on the scene checking for hot spots and fire extension.
The fire caused approximately $100,000.00 damage to the structure and it's contents. There were no reports of civilians or firefighters being injured. The American Red Cross was called to the scene, and is assisting the three families with housing.

Landslide: 2980 and 2982 High Forest Ave (Mt. Airy) Date: 3/12/06 Time: 8:30 p.m.
This is District Three-Fire Chief Glenn Coleman reporting on a landslide and building evacuation in Mount Airy. Fire units were dispatched at 6:11 p.m. to a report of a landslide into an apartment building with people unable to evacuate the structure.
Upon arriving, fire companies found a retaining wall had fell in due to heavy rain occurring over the last few days. The retaining wall took out two bridges that led to two apartment buildings located at 2980 and 2982 High Forest Avenue.
Approximately 30 people had to be rescued from the structures. The landslide did not reach the buildings; it stopped approximately four feet away from the structures. A decision was made to vacate both structures because more rain was forecasted for the evening.
The Cincinnati Building Department and the building owner's representatives responded to the scene. Also the American Red Cross responded and assisted approximately 18 people (5 families) who were displaced; the remaining residents are staying with family or friends.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. No loss was estimated on structural damages or on how long occupants may be displaced. Firefighters were on the scene about two hours.

1 Alarm Fire: 5580 Hillside Avenue btn River Vista & Darby Date: 3/18/06 Time: 5:33 PM
This is District One Fire Chief Howard Reed from the Cincinnati Fire Department, reporting on a one-alarm fire that occurred at 5578 River Road; the fire happened at 5:33 PM on 3/18/06.
The fire occurred in a vacant one-story frame structure. Upon our arrival we found a one-family structure fully involved in flame. A defensive attack on the fire occurred; bringing the fire under control in 30 minutes.
The structure will be razed due to it sustaining a large amount of fire damage; the estimated fire loss was approximately $20,000. There were no reports of civilians or firefighters being injured. Fire Investigator Mark Persley is investigating the fire cause.

1 Alarm Fire: 551 Lowell Avenue btn. Morrison Whitfield (Clifton) Date: 3/28/06 Time: 02:48 A.M.
This is District One District Chief Howard Reed from the Cincinnati Fire Department reporting on a one-alarm fire that occurred at 551 Lowell Avenue on 3/28/06 at 02:48 A.M. Fire dispatched received several 911 calls which reported a fire at that address.
Upon firefighters arrival, they found medium to heavy smoke coming from the second floor rear windows of a twelve unit, three-story brick apartment building. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack on the fire, which was in apartment number three, bringing the fire under control in less than 15 minutes.
The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area, but is being investigated further, there were some unexplainable conditions that required a fire investigator to respond. The fire caused approximately $20,000 damage to the structure and its contents.
The occupants of the structures were awakened when one heard a popping noise. He awaken the two other occupants, another adult and a 1/2-year-old child, all were asleep in a bedroom adjacent to the kitchen.
The American Red Cross was call to assist the family with finding housing; the other tenants' apartments received no smoke or fire damage.

2 Alarm Fire: 7725 Vine Street btn Byrnes Lake Ct & the city limits (Carthage) Date: 3/27/06 Time: 5:15 PM
This is District Four Fire Chief Jay Boeing reporting Cincinnati firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at 7725 Vine Street in Carthage, the fire occurred on 3/27/6 at 5:15 PM. First responding fire units found heavy fire in the rear of a large one-story block building, with fire rapidly spreading to the roof area.
An aggressive interior attack on the fire, along with a coordinated effort on the roof brought it under control in a short time. The second alarm fire crews were needed to extinguish fire on the roof area, which had burrowed into the roof insulation of the built-up roof.
It took 45 Firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the situation under control. The cause of the fire is unknown; fire damage estimates are $50,000.

Natural Gas Leak: 1700 Grand Avenue (Price Hill) Date: 3/28/06 Time: 09:02 A.M.
This is District Chief Ron Davis of the Cincinnati Fire Department reporting on a natural gas leak that occurred on 3/28/06 at 09:02 AM.
Fire Companies responded to 1700 Grand Avenue, the location of Roberts Public School, they responded for a report of natural gas in the building. After investigating the situation with the help of Cinergy crews, it was discovered that the leak was coming from a gas regulator valve in the school's boiler room. Cinergy crews shut off the gas supply to the building to effect repairs.
Initially 600 students were evacuated from the building until meters could be used to deem the building safe. Thereafter the children were allowed to re-enter the building, occupying only the school's auditorium.
After consultation with Cinergy representatives they agreed not to turn on the building's gas supply until all the children had left school for the day; this agreement enabled the school to resume normal activities.

Building Collapse: 725 Greenwood Avenue btn. Shuttlesworth & Reading (Avondale) Date: 4/3/06 Time: 1:10 a.m.
This is District Three-Fire Chief Glenn Coleman reporting on a partial building collapse and evacuation that occurred in Avondale on Sunday 4/2/06 at 11:19 p.m.
Fire units were dispatched to a report of a ceiling collapse at 725 Greenwood Avenue. Upon arriving fire companies found a partial collapse of the third floor of a three story 24-unit apartment building. The damage came when the area was experiencing a severe thunderstorm. Firefighters evacuated all occupants from the building and barricaded the area so no one would re-enter. All utilities to the building were shut off. The Cincinnati Building Department and the building owner representatives responded to the scene.
The American Red Cross responded to assist approximately 10 families who were displaced. All other residents stayed with family or friends.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. No loss was estimated on damages or how long occupants may be displaced. Firefighters were on the scene about two hours.
