What is the purpose of the run numbers that are now being announced with EMS calls?

From what was explained to me (since I had the same question), is that there is a new electronic run sheet that is going to be implemented soon and the run # is mandatory in order to get the information processed correctly. That is what has been told to me, but I can't verify the validity.

Thanks! Does anyone know if a rum number will be assigned to fire runs too or is this strictly for EMS paperwork?

I don't expect that the run numer will be broadcast for fire runs. The electronic clip boards are for EMS. The clip board allows the company making the run to transfer run data from their clip board to the transport unit's clip board through infrared transfer, like blue tooth. I got to try one out for drill one morning, and they are pretty slick, but there is resistance. Broadcasting the run numbers now is just for trial run purposes, but will be required in the future, or at least until all units have the mdt style laptops on board. For fire runs, it is not necessary. Every run has always had a run number assigned to it, but for fire runs the company officer can take care of the paper work on return to quarters.
