Media Release: Retirement of the Fire Lieutenant Gayle Unzicker

May 28, 2010 will mark the first time ever that the Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) will retire one of its female firefighters with full length of service (LOS). Fire Lieutenant-Paramedic Gayle Unzicker who entered the CFD on June 30, 1985 as a fire recruit and promoted through the ranks of senior firefighter, fire apparatus operator and finally fire lieutenant will officially retire as an active member of the Cincinnati Fire Department. Gayle’s twenty-four hour tour begins at 07:00 AM in the morning.
Lieutenant Unzicker has worked throughout the city in various locations, as fire apparatus operator Gayle was assigned to the former Ladder Co.7 located at fire headquarters at 5th and Central Avenues. In 2001, Gayle aggressively study for promotion to Fire Lieutenant, Gayle has been the only female firefighter ever to obtain this rank.
As Fire Lieutenant Gayle traveled the city filling vacant fire lieutenant positions until her current duty assignment became available at Rescue 2. Rescue 2 is the Paramedic Supervisor who is responsible for (City-Wide) Emergency Medical Services oversight. Rescue 2 responds to all multi-alarms, vehicle extrications, SWAT operations, hazardous materials mitigations, mass casualty situations etc.
Lieutenant Unzicker also serves in the capacity of fire instructor and peer-fitness trainer for the fire department. We would like all to recognize Gayle’s accomplishments and to call and wish her well with her long awaited retirement, twenty-five years on dedicated service to the citizens of Cincinnati. Fire Lieutenant Unzicker, thank you for your service and dedication.
