WHAT AM I TO DO? FIREFIGHTER BUYOUTS A three-million-dollar budget deficit is forcing the city of Youngstown to look at potential cuts. Tonight, it appears the fire department may have been saved. Youngstown City Council and the fire department have agreed on a buyout plan that would avoid layoffs. "THE CITY WILL BUYOUT THE SENIOR EMPLOYEES AT A HIGHER WAGE AND GIVE THEM A BUYOUT PACKAGE AND BRING IN EMPLOYEES AT A LOWER WAGE." Firefighters who take the buyout would receive on average 56-thousand dollars over five years..along with severance pay...saving the city up to 850 thousand dollars, that's enough to avoid cuts within the fire department. "THIS IS REALLY SETTING THE STANDARD FOR WHAT WE NEED TO DO, MOVING FORWARD TO GET THROUGH THESE ECONOMIC TIMES." But it's not a done deal, the city needs at least 15 firefighters to take the buyouts in order to save enough money. "THE MORE WE GET THE BETTER IT IS FOR EVERYBODY AND IT'LL HELP THE CITY AGAINST ITS DEFICIT A LOT MORE QUICKLY." Under the plan, each firefighter who takes the buyout will get replaced by a new employee..six of those will get paid through a federal grant, that way the department won't lose any dollars or manpower. "THE KEY IS KEEPING THE STATIONS OPEN, KEEPING THE RESPONSE TIME TO THREE MINUTES, AND THEN ALL OUR COMMUNITY IS PROTECTED PROPERLY." Protected and paid for. "IT SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE CITIZENS THAT WE UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT THEIR DOLLARS ARE, AND WE'RE WILLING TO DO WHAT'S NECESSARY TO KEEP SERVING AND MAKE THOSE SACRIFICES." Firefighters must register for the buyouts by June 20th. If less than 15 firefighters take the money, the buyout plan falls through, and layoffs could be on the horizon.
